What Is a Cubic Yard of Pea Gravel?
A cubic yard is a 3-foot × 3-foot × 3-foot cube — 27 cubic feet of material. Filled with dry, loose pea gravel it weighs approximately 2,700 pounds (1.35 short tons or 1,225 kg). When dumped from a truck in a driveway it forms a cone roughly 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide at the base.
Visually: a standard washing machine is approximately one cubic yard in volume. A typical pickup truck bed (5 ft × 6 ft × 1.5 ft deep) holds about 1.1 cubic yards when filled level with the sides.
How to Calculate Cubic Yards for Pea Gravel
Convert depth from inches to feet first: Depth (ft) = Depth (inches) ÷ 12
Shortcut: Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324
Worked Example: 15×20 ft Driveway at 4 Inches Deep
- Area: 15 × 20 = 300 sq ft
- Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
- Volume: 300 × 0.333 = 100 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 100 ÷ 27 = 3.70 yd³
- Add 10% waste: 3.70 × 1.10 = 4.07 yd³ to order
- Weight: 4.07 × 1.35 = 5.49 tons
- At $65/yd³ delivered: 4.07 × $65 = $264.55

Cubic Yards vs Tons — Which Unit to Use
Both measure the same material — one by volume, one by weight. Which to use depends on your supplier.

Calculating Cubic Yards for Circular and Irregular Areas
Circular area: Area = π × radius² = 3.14159 × (diameter ÷ 2)². Then multiply by depth in feet and divide by 27. A 14-ft diameter circle at 3 inches deep: 3.14159 × 49 × 0.25 ÷ 27 = 1.43 yd³.
L-shaped area: Divide into two rectangles, calculate each separately, add the totals.
Irregular area: Divide into rectangles and triangles. Triangle area = 0.5 × base × height. Add all sections together then apply the depth calculation.
